Toronto Hydro seeks 'load shift' customer

The Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited (Toronto Hydro) has introduced a new pilot program designed to encourage customers with smart meters to "load shift" and help manage their electricity use.

The program is available to Toronto Hydro customers who are enrolled in the Peaksaver Program, and who are participating in the Toronto Hydro Smart Meter Time-Of-Use pilot project.

Participants will receive $10 a month for a total credit of $30 on their fall 2008 electricity bill. The pilot provides Toronto Hydro with valuable information on how to assist homeowners with load shifting and conservation. Power shifting should complement other power-saving activities, such as running appliances during evenings, which can help lower the demand on hot summer afternoons. Etobicoke man perishes saving kayakers

OPP have identified the 45-year-old Etobicoke man missing on Lake Huron since Saturday afternoon as Dave Doyle.

The South Bruce OPP said the man's body was located Sunday on the beach a short distance north of MacCaskill Road in Kincardine, about 220 kilometres northwest of Toronto.

According to police, around 5 p.m. Saturday, two men entered the lake to help three kayaking teens who appeared to be in distress. After making it to the kayakers and assisting them toward shore, one of the men "dropped out of sight." A subsequent water and shoreline search was undertaken that day, and resumed Sunday.

Anyone with information that can assist police is asked to South Bruce OPP at 519-396-3341, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

TCDSB high school teachers accept contract

Toronto's Catholic Secondary School teachers voted recently to accept a tentative four-year agreement that would see a three per cent increase in their salary each year of the term.

Union President Kathleen Gardiner said the members voted 95 per cent in support of the agreement, which has "considerable improvements in benefits, long sought after."

Teachers and senior management have also agreed to improved consultation processes on local issues, she added.

"Provincial discussions between the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association, earlier this year, were of considerable assistance in this round of bargaining," Gardiner said.

The agreement is subject to approval by the Ministry of Education's appointed supervisor of the Toronto Catholic District School Board.
