The sound of gunfire rang out in the Beach Monday morning as police shot a man they believed was driving a stolen vehicle.
The province's Special Investigations Unit is currently probing the incident, which happened Oct. 6.
Just after 3 a.m., police were called to Beech Avenue, just north of Queen Street East, after a parking enforcement officer discovered that a BMW SUV was stolen.
Shots rang out when the vehicle's occupant got into an altercation with police as they attempted to arrest him.
The 49-year-old driver was shot twice in the upper torso when he allegedly tried to run down police.
He was transported to hospital and is expected to recover.
The man's name has not been released.
The SIU interviewed six Toronto police officers, five of which are considered witnesses. The investigation is ongoing.
The SIU is a civilian oversight agency that investigates serious injury, death or sexual assault involving police.
