Today (Wednesday, March 5) marks the culmination of provincial high school championships in girls volleyball and boys basketball at various venues throughout the province, including the two most prestigious championships right here in Toronto.

The Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) runs championships at four levels, AAAA, AAA, AA and A, and both the AAAA hoops and volleyball championships are here in Toronto.

AAAA HOOPS

In the AAAA hoops OFSAA playdowns, the 8 p.m. gold medal game at York University features the top two seeds, No. 1 ranked Pickering High School of Ajax against No. 2 ranked Eastern Commerce of east Toronto.

The bronze medal game at 6 p.m. features Scarborough's No. 6 ranked Blessed Mother Teresa against No. 4 ranked H.B. Beal of London.

In an all-Toronto semifinal Wednesday afternoon, Eastern Commerce defeated Mother Teresa 62-46. Marvin Binney led the Eastern Commerce attack with 15 points while Romaine Lawrence for Mother Teresa was game-high scorer with 21 points.

In the other semifinal, Pickering High School defeated H.B. Beal 66-44.

AAAA VOLLEYBALL

The other prestigious championship happening in Toronto tonight (Wednesday), 7 p.m. at Centennnial College is the quad-A girls volleyball final.

And Toronto still had a team in the running with Scarborough's Birchmount Park, ranked No. 8, slated to take on Aurora, ranked No. 5, in a 3:30 p.m. semifinal game. The other semifinal had Sinclair, ranked No. 3, against Forest Heights, ranked No. 4.

Birchmount Park won its Wednesday morning quarterfinal game 2-0 (27-25, 25-23) over Waterdown, ranked No. 6.

AA HOOPS

In double-A OFSAA hoops in Oshawa, Scarborough's Sir Robert Borden, ranked No. 6, was slated to take on Oakville's St. Thomas Aquinas, ranked No. 4, in the Wednesday night bronze medal game.

Sir Robert Borden lost a heartbreaker in their semifinal earlier in the day in overtime 54-51 to A.Y. Jackson, ranked No. 7. Ajahmo Clarke scored 17 points for Sir Robert Borden.

Sir Robert Borden won its Tuesday night quarterfinal 61-45 over No. 3 ranked Montcalm Secondary School of London. Ajahmo Clarke was top scorer for Borden with 16 points.

AAA HOOPS

The only other Toronto team still alive in their playoff pursuits going into Wednesday afternoon was the Annex's Central Commerce in the AAA hoops playdowns in Paris. Organizers actually put off Wednesday's dates to Thursday because of the huge storm to hit Southern Ontario.

Central Commerce, ranked No. 5, won its Tuesday quarterfinal 54-39 over Scarborough's Jean Vanier.

Also losing in the quarterfinals, here, was Etobicoke's Martingrove, ranked No. 8, 61-53 to Vaughan, ranked No. 1.
