It's the storm before the calm in high school sports with provincial championships underway in boys basketball and girls volleyball prior to March break next week.

Here's a quick update of how Toronto teams are doing going into action on Tuesday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

(AAAA)

The Toronto District School Board is hosting this championship right in Toronto with the Wednesday, March 5 championship game slated at York University at 8 p.m.

Toronto had six teams in this competition with five of them ranked in the top half of the draw (Eastern Commerce, No. 2; Father Henry Carr, No. 3; Blessed Mother Teresa, No. 6; and Oakwood Collegiate, No. 8) with only independent school St. Michael's College in the bottom half of the draw, ranked 16th.

Basically, the opening day on Monday was good for the five Toronto teams in the top half of the draw.

Eastern Commerce, by virtue of its No. 2 seed, only had to play one game, which they won easily over 11th-ranked Pine Ridge Secondary School of Pickering 74-54, led by Alex Hill's 22 points.

Third-ranked Father Henry Carr opened with an 83-45 win over 18th-ranked Colonel By. S.S. (Gloucester), led by Rodel Grenaway with 15 points and Tramar Sutherland with 13.

Henry Carr then followed up with a 59-43 win over 14th-ranked Denis Morris, led by Tramar Sutherland with 28 points.

Sixth-ranked Blessed Mother Teresa opened with a 76-40 win over 16th-ranked St. Michael's College, led by Romaine Lawrence with 14 points and Ancil Martin with nine points.

Blessed Mother Teresa then followed up with a win over Sacred Heart (no score listed).

Eighth-ranked Oakwood Collegiate opened with a 61-43 win over 14th-ranked Denis Morris High School, led by Kenneth Buchanan with 18 points.

Oakwood then followed up with a 48-24 win over St. Anne's.

St. Michael's (which lost the opener yesterday 76-40 to Blessed Mother Teresa) were knocked out of the tournament with their second loss of the day, 71-57 to Colonel By.

(AAA)

Both TDSB representatives won their opening round games Monday in Paris, Ont., No. 5 ranked Central Commerce 53-50 over No. 15 Huntsville (led by Darnell Walters with 18 points and Gamachu Ibrahim with 10 points) and No. 8 ranked Martingrove 85-54 over 14th-ranked St. David (led by Matthew Wright with 20 points).

Scarborough's Jean Vanier, ranked No. 10, representing the TCDSB, won its opener 65-55 over No. 4 ranked St. Patrick of Ottawa, led by Chervon Hopkinson with 19 points.

(AA)

At the AA OFSAA championships in Oshawa, TDSB's lone representative, No. 6 ranked Sir Robert Borden of Scarborough, won its lone game 65-53 over 16th-ranked Bishop McDonnell, led by Ajahmo Clarke with 19 points.

Bishop F. Marrocco, ranked No. 15, representing the Toronto Catholic District School Board had tough luck, losing its opener in heartbreaking fashion 48-47 to No. 4 ranked St. Thomas Aquinas from Oakville. It then lost its sudden death match 52-47 to Winston Churchill of Thunder Bay.

(A)

Eighth-ranked Crawford Adventist of North York, which plays in the Toronto District Colleges Athletic Association, defeated ninth-ranked Holy Trinity of Cornwall 83-56. Mark Perrin had a spectacular 55 points for Crawford Adventist while Aaron Manswell added 13 points.

West Toronto Collegiate, in the 16th and bottom seed, lost its opener 72-43 to top seed Mere-Teresa. West Toronto was led by Samir Ahmed with 19 points and Remington Dixon with 11.
