Julian de Guzman celebrity game set for Robbie

Scarborough soccer star hosts Birchmount Stadium match

Scarborough's Julian de Guzman will be inviting a couple of dozen of his closest friends out for a soccer match next month.

The Julian de Guzman and Friends Celebrity Charity Game is set for June 29 at Birchmount Stadium as part of the 42nd annual Robbie International Soccer Tournament. The match is sponsored by Umbro Canada and proceeds will go to cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy research, the two charities supported by The Robbie.

A midfielder who grew up playing in the North Scarborough Soccer Club, the 27-year-old de Guzman presently plays for Deportivo de La Coruna in the Spanish league's first division. He has represented Canada 22 times with the men's national team including a recent two-goal performance against Costa Rica in the opening match of the Gold Cup.

Jonathan de Guzman, his younger brother, also plays pro soccer in Holland.

The Robbie tournament runs June 28 to 30 in Scarborough and will feature an international field of boys and girls teams between the ages of 10 and 18. Two teams from Scotland and a number of squads from the United States along with teams from across Canada are scheduled to take part in the tourney.

Complete rosters for the charity game are still being worked out subject to the availability of players. However, a large of number of current and former professional players are expected to take part.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for youth.
