
The East York United Football Club U11 team beat out the North Scarborough Soccer Club Bulldogs to win the tourney championship on Monday, June 30..
"It was very big win for us," said co-coach Georgio Trikkas.
"We went into the tournament as the underdog."
The East York boys topped a 20-team field which included squads from Quebec and New York.
"They all played like a team," Trikkas said. "They supported each other. They played hard. They were first to the ball. They just played amazingly well."
When the boys won the championship, Trikkas said they all started shouting "Robbie, Robbie, Robbie."
Trikkas said he and co-coach Marko Dimipoulos are proud of the 16 boys who make up the team. This is their second year playing together.
"This was the first time we played in The Robbie," Trikkas said. "We'll be back."
In Saturdays action at The Robbie, East York beat Leaside Athletic 4-2 and the Bluewater Blaze, from London, Ont., 4-1.
On Sunday, East York blanked the Ottawa South United Force 2-0 and moved on to the quarterfinals to beat Dixie United by a score of 3-1.
In the semifinals, East York topped the Glen Shields Sun Devils 1-0.
In the championship game, beat the North Scarborough Bulldogs 3-1.
Goal scorers in the final game were Jourdan Robinson-Shanks, Anthony Michelis and Emmanuel Zambazis.
With added confidence from their Robbie win, Trikkas said the boys are thrilled to be going into this weekend's international Toronto Cup Tournament.
"At their practice this week they told me they're going to win this weekend," he said.
"They are all so happy."
