The Rogers Masala!Mehndi!Masti! Festival is gearing up for another tremendous edition as Canada's largest free South Asian multi-disciplinary arts event. The festival, which takes place from July 25 to 27 at Exhibition Place has grown tremendously in size and scope over the last few years, bringing together local and international performers, actors and musicians to share the stage in a celebration of culture.
Here's a look at a few highlighted artists and events at the 2008 Roger's Masala!Mehndi!Masti! Festival.
New York-based producer Karsh Kale and New Delhi-based electronica group Midival Punditz pioneered a musical sound that blurs the boundaries between electronica, rock and classical Indian music. With the support of guest musician and ghazal vocalist, Vishal Vaid, this all-star band will hit the stage with a special performance for their first-ever Toronto appearance.
Brantford-born Onkar Singh has developed a well-respected reputation as one of Canada's premiere East Indian vocalists.
Throughout his 25-year career, Singh has carved out his niche through performances in various venues including devotional settings, corporate gatherings and music festivals.
Trained in gurmat sangeet (Sikh devotional music tradition), Singh has most recently developed partnerships with Western artists in order to infuse a new element to his vast musical cache. Singh will display his world-class musical ability during a unique interactive mainstage performance.
The Roger's Masala!Mehndi!Masti! Festival film series (MMMovies) will present a retrospective of critically acclaimed actress and social activist, Nandita Das, who shot to international fame for her controversial role in director Deepa Mehta's movie Fire. Her work in several other movies including Maati Maay, Amar Bhuvan and Bawandar has preserved Das's reputation as one of South Asia's most revered artists.
Having served as member of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 2005, Das was recently awarded the highly coveted Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of the most prestigious Arts awards presented by the Government of France.
Das will be in attendance at each MMMovies screening throughout the duration of the festival and also be on hand to discuss her work and role as an actor and social activist during a special Master Class.
Masala!Mehndi!Masti will also present Fashion Faatina. This event will feature the hottest trends in the fusion of South Asian traditional dress with contemporary Western style.
A Bollywood-themed runway fashion show will feature models elegantly embodying the chic sophistication and style of today's best designers. For all of the families looking for a way to enjoy the weekend, the festival will also feature a Bachcha Party (children's party) aimed at connecting in a positive way with the talent and potential of South Asian youth.
As a closing event, the Rogers MMM Festival will attempt a world-record-setting dance class. This free event will feature instructors on hand to teach all in attendance how to move and groove to the pulse and rhythm of Bollywood.
This year's festival is sure to continue the successful tradition that has made The Rogers Masala!Mehndi!Masti Festival one of Toronto's most anticipated summer events. Visit www.masalamehndimasti.com for details.
